Salary: $1500 (6 days + 1 day training)
PLANS (Promoting Leadership in health for African Nova Scotians) is looking to recruit and hire up to five (5) Camp Counsellors to support the African Nova Scotian Health Sciences Summer Camp as part of a recruitment initiative aimed at increasing the interest in the health professions among students of African descent in Nova Scotia.
The Camp Counsellors will be responsible for 24 hour supervision for all activities including nights. Accommodations and meals are provided. Counsellors will work closely with the Program Coordinator to coordinate and implement all aspects of the camp program including:
- Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the overall mission of the camp;
- Camper registration – greeting campers and families, collecting and verifying documentation, etc.;
- Accompany campers and participate in programming sessions and recreation activities;
- Ensure all areas visited are left clean, organized, and free of litter;
- Identify and respond to camper behavior issues;
- Promptly report any incidents and concerns to Program Coordinator; and
- Ensure completion of required documentation (daily reports, end of camp report).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current post-secondary student (or recent graduate) in a health/science program
- Experience working with youth/adolescents
- Enthusiasm for the health professions and post-secondary education
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong leadership and organizational skills
- Ability to work within a team structure
- Certified Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Preference will be given to students of African descent enrolled in a health program.
- OPEN to all post-secondary students (recent grads); not restricted to Dalhousie
- Must participate in training day (paid).
- Criminal Records Check, Child Abuse Registry/Vulnerable Sector Screening (or willingness to obtain if selected).
