Opportunity: The Childhood Acute Illness & Nutrition Network

The Childhood Acute Illness and Nutrition Network (CHAIN) is a global research network that aims to optimize the management and care of highly vulnerable children in resource-limited settings to improve survival, growth and development 

(http://www.chainnetwork.org/). CHAIN focuses both on inpatient acute illness and post discharge recovery and therefore has a facility and community component. 

The CHAIN site in Malawi is recruiting an exceptional post-doctoral research fellows in the area of childhood and adolescent nutrition, health and development in populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). 

Successful applicants will take a lead role in managing the CHAIN project in Malawi as well as the design and execution of related studies on the topic of nutritional and medical care of acutely ill malnourished children. The applicant will be based in Blantyre, Malawi for the duration of 2 years and help lead the clinical research portfolio. 

  1. We will be accepting applications from candidates who meet the following criteria: Completed a doctoral graduate degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, nutritional sciences, or related discipline; AND,
  2. Have demonstrated exemplary recent scholarship (i.e., first author publications, conference presentations, and/or successful grant applications) in the following areas of focus: epidemiology and biostatistics and human nutrition. 

CHAIN is specifically looking for a candidate with proven leadership skills. Experience in managing clinical research studies and engagement with different stakeholders in LMIC’s would be desired. 

CHAIN will provide competitive salary support for the entire duration of a two year appointment.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Letter of intent (LOI): LOIs should summarize the applicant’s interest and most relevant research activities (e.g., published papers) in the area of child and adolescent health and development. The LOI should also include a description of the applicant’s career goals. Letters of intent should not exceed a length of two pages, single-spaced.
  • Reference letters: two reference letters should be sent directly to Dr. Robert Bandsma. Reference Letters should speak to a candidate’s research skills in the area of child and adolescent health and development. Referees should also highlight the candidate’s leadership qualities, and their potential for success working as an independent scientific investigator. Referees should qualitatively rank the applicant compared to their peers. 

The CV and LOI should be merged into one document and saved as a pdf file before submission. Application packages should be saved with your name and the date of submission (i.e., lastname_firstname_Month_DD_YYYY) in the filename.
