Widening Accessibility Stream

Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine is committed to widening accessibility to medical education and training to broad and diverse populations, including underrepresented populations and individuals who encounter significant barriers in their pursuit of medical education.

In order to be eligible for admission, applicants must meet academic and non-academic requirements. Reflective of our commitment to widening accessibility, applicants will have the option of completing a questionnaire within Section 2 of the online application to be considered under Widening Accessibility Stream. This questionnaire is intended to help further inform the Admissions Committee about the applicant's personal context. Completion of this Widening Accessibility section is OPTIONAL. Applicants that do not have a completed questionnaire are assessed in the General Stream only. 

Information from this section will be used to identify eligible applicants to be considered under a designated stream for widening accessibility in the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island applicant pools, as determined by the Admissions Committee.  Information from this questionnaire may also be used to determine eligibility for additional Dalhousie Medical School positions that may be created from time to time. While the Widening Accessibility Stream is currently limited to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island applicants, all applicants are encouraged to complete the ​questionnaire as this information can be helpful for the Admissions Office and Committee to better understand characteristics of our applicant pool. Criteria to be considered under Widening Accessibility is determined by the Admissions Committee and may be subject to change at the Committee's discretion annually. Meeting criteria for the Widening Accessibility Stream does not guarantee an offer of admission. Applications that do not meet the criteria under the Widening Accessibility Stream are assessed as an application in the General Stream. 

All information is treated confidentially and will be considered only for purposes of the Widening Accessibility Stream, to determine eligibility for additional positions that may be created, and for quality assurance purposes in support of Dalhousie Medicine's commitment to Social Accountability. . With respect to quality assurance, data will only be reported in aggregate form to preserve confidentiality. Information in this section is not a component of the applicant's file score.

Requirements

Place of Residence

  • Must be a Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident at the time of application
  • Applicants must be a Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island resident as defined by Place of Residency definition.

Degree Requirement

All applicants are required to complete a 90-120 credit hour baccalaureate degree granted by an accredited institution. This degree must be complete prior to the start of the undergraduate medical education program. For more information please click here.

GPA Requirement

Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

An MCAT score completed within the past 5 years MCAT that meets the minimum requirement for the applicant category in which you are applying. For more information please click here.

Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer)

All applicants are required to complete CASPer on designated dates for Dalhousie Medicine within the current application cycle. For more information please click here.

Section 2 Online Application

Must complete and submit all  mandatory components of Section 2 of the online application by the stated deadline. For more information please click here.
