Welcome to Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine!

On behalf of our Dean, Dr. David Anderson, we are thrilled that you are joining us! We are incredibly grateful for your commitment to advancing the academic mission of the medical school. Our role is to help set you up for success in the faculty and navigate your first weeks, months, and early years ahead in this role. We hope that we can help make this experience for you both engaging and rewarding. 

Our teaching is distributed broadly over the three Maritime provinces, including our three undergraduate campuses (Dalhousie Medicine Nova Scotia (DMNS)-Halifax based, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB)-Saint John based, and Cape Breton Medical Campus- Sydney Regional Municipality based.  This geographic distribution makes in-person orientation sessions challenging, but we hope this introductory message will provide you with a starting point for access to information, faculty development opportunities, and other resources you may find helpful as you begin your new appointment. 

Interested in teaching?

Teaching provides a great opportunity for practicing health care providers to remain current and engaged. Our faculty contribute to the next generation of medical professionals, engaging with learners who are curious and eager to learn. Teaching builds a true sense of community of practice and promotes engagement with various interprofessional health care providers. Learn more about how to become more involved in teaching below. Types of teaching opportunities can be in the accompanying Appendix A.

Undergraduate Medical Education: The Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) unit oversees the accredited four-year MD program at Dalhousie Medical School.  The Cape Breton Medical Campus will join UGME’s distributed education delivery model in 2025, with the addition of 30 more seats. The guiding principles of our curriculum are professionalism, community contributors, lifelong learners, and skilled clinicians.

As an educator, your role in teaching the learning objectives of the MD program and shaping the next generation of physicians is pivotal in achieving our joint long-term goal of quality health care in the Maritimes. The learning objectives of the component you are teaching can be found in the syllabus and in the curriculum map (Dal log-in required). By providing timely feedback, completing evaluations promptly, and/ or actively observing medical students, you empower them with the necessary tools to excel in their roles and assist the MD program achieve the standards set by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools.

Compensation models vary by department. Dalhousie Medicine Nova Scotia (DMNS) faculty are remunerated according to rates determined by their respective department (based on AFP or other arrangements). If you are part of the DMNS faculty, it is recommended that you discuss with your department head to ascertain both the time commitment and the remuneration specifics. 

Faculty members are encouraged to contact their respective Unit Head or Assistant Dean for any questions about program pedagogy/curriculum delivery.

It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with policies on storm closure, absence, student accommodation, lecture length, and medical learner mistreatment. This list is not exhaustive, and other policies may be relevant depending on the teaching component. Please visit UGME Policies for more information. Postgraduate Medical Education

The Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) office oversees the training and education of medical residents in the specialty of family medicine and over 50 other Royal College specialty and subspeciality residency programs. Ensuring residents receive quality training, coordinating residency programs, supporting faculty development, and fostering positive learning environments are essential parts of what PGME offer. The office plays a crucial role in maintaining accreditation standards, supporting residents’ well-being, and promoting excellence in medical education.

As educators in postgraduate medical education, your role is pivotal in shaping the future of healthcare. Your expertise, guidance, and mentorship are instrumental in training residents to become competent and compassionate physicians. By providing timely feedback, completing evaluations promptly, and actively observing residents, you empower them with the necessary tools to excel in their roles. Your dedication ensures the delivery of high-quality educational experiences, ultimately contributing to the advancement of healthcare and the betterment of patient outcomes.

Supporting Diverse, Inclusive and Anti-Oppressive Learning Environments in the Faculty of Medicine

All faculty are encouraged to take the accredited, Continuing Professional Development course Supporting Diverse, Inclusive and Anti-Oppressive Learning Environments in the Faculty of Medicine. This resource, developed by the Continuing Professional Development and Medical Education Office, is designed to be a foundational entry level tool to understand the influence of racism, prejudice and implicit bias on the teaching and practice of medicine and to build confidence in creating psychologically safe learning environments. Medical education and the practice of medicine is always changing, and it is paramount that the Faculty of Medicine evolves with the times to meet the needs of faculty, staff, learners and the communities we serve.

The Office of Professional Affairs is an available resource designed to support faculty, learners and staff by creating and maintaining a healthy and safe learning environment in the medical school.

Continuing Professional Development Education

Continuing Professional Development Education - As a new faculty member, you may be particularly interested in what our office of Continuing Professional Development and Medical Education (CPDME) has to offer. These programs give you an easy, convenient way to keep your knowledge current.

Faculty Development

Faculty Development Dalhousie Medicine Nova Scotia  and Faculty Development Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick: Develop your skills by participating in the Faculty Development Program through Dalhousie Continuing Professional Development. As a faculty member, you’ll find a variety of learning opportunities to enhance your skills in the areas of research, leadership, professional development and promotion, educational design and administration, and teaching. Whether you want to learn how to provide better feedback to your students or you’d like to become a tutor, we offer a variety of learning opportunities to help you achieve your professional goals. Our Certificate in Clinical Teaching, which is accredited/certified for CME credit,  is a wonderful program, at no cost to Faculty of Medicine faculty members, created for you to hone a foundational set of teaching skills. This modular program has received excellent feedback and is a great place to start your skill building.

Medical Research

Medical Research - Medical education research is an exciting area to explore.  We're happy to help you do this in the best possible way.  The Research and Scholarship in Education program is a "one-stop shop" for advice on funding, methods, methodologies, publishing and conferences in medical research.  Research is also an integral part of the medical school’s mission to advance the quality of health and health care in the Maritimes and beyond.

Research Training and Support Programs - Dalhousie Medical School offers an array of research training and support programs, tailored to the needs of faculty members and trainees – junior to senior, basic science and clinical. The goal of these programs is to provide new and experienced researchers alike with the knowledge, tools, connections and support they require to succeed in their research endeavours.

Dalhousie Libraries

Dalhousie Libraries - For support with accessing or creating resources for teaching and research, connect with Dalhousie Libraries. Our librarians can conduct sessions for your students on using the library, ensure that you have the necessary materials to teach, provide support with research projects including evidence syntheses, and much more. Please note that keeping an active academic appointment is the key to maintaining your access to the library’s electronic resources.

Getting Connected - Banner ID, NetID, and Dalhousie Email

  • Banner ID: All new faculty and staff are assigned a Banner ID (starting with ‘B0_____’). This is your ‘employee’ (or appointee) number. If you were previously a learner at Dalhousie, you may already have a Banner ID. Please refer to your appointment letter recently issued from the Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic. If you did not receive it, please contact academic.staff.relations@dal.ca.  

  • NetID: Once you know your Banner ID, please activate your NetID. Your NetID is used for access to Dalhousie systems, including your Dalhousie email, the libraries, and Brightspace. Click here to activate your NetID (and/or reset your password).

  • Dal Email: Once your NetID is activated, you can start using your Dalhousie email. Your default address will be your netid@dal.ca. However, we suggest that you create a personalized Dal email address (also called an ‘alias’) using the firstname.lastname@dal.ca format (or similar), which is more practical. Your Dal emails will all go to a single inbox (including any aliases) linked to your NetID. To set up a personalized Dal email, click here. If you prefer to use just one email (Dal, IWK, or NSH, we encourage you to forward your emails to one single address to ensure you receive all necessary communications.

  • Your DalCard is your all-access pass, granting access to buildings and spaces on the Halifax campus.

  • MedIT: Our Medical Information Technology unit (MedIT) provides technology support to medical school students, residents, faculty, and staff. For more information, please contact medit@dal.ca.

Dalhousie ‘Be Counted’ Census Questionnaire
