Foundations of Case‑Based Tutoring in Medical Education
This asynchronous course has been developed to provide faculty with the skills they need to facilitate case-based learning tutorials in Med 1, Med 2 and Clerkship (PIERS). Physician Assistant faculty are also welcome to join.*
Objectives:
By the end of these modules, tutors will be able to effectively facilitate inclusive Case-Based Learning, engage learners, and apply assessment, feedback, and support strategies aligned with Dalhousie UGME expectations.
- Module One | What is Case-Based Learning?
Define Case-Based Learning (CBL) within Dalhousie Medicine and apply their facilitative role to effectively support learner engagement. - Module Two | Optimizing Learner Engagement
Promote inclusive engagement, build trust, and facilitate clinical reasoning through balanced and learner-centred discussion. - Module Three | Feedback & Assessment
Apply CBL assessment processes to deliver timely, accurate, and behaviour-based feedback and evaluations. - Module Four | Identifying & Supporting Learners in Distress
Identify learners in distress early and apply supportive, inclusive strategies to address their needs.

How to self-register:
- 1. Please click on this link to go to dal.brightspace.com. This is the general entry page for Brightspace courses.
2. Click on “Academic Support” on the header and choose “Self-Registration” from the drop-down menu.
3. Scroll down until you find the course named Medicine - Foundations of Case-Based Tutoring in Medical Education
4. Click “Register”.
5. You will then be prompted to enter your NetID and password. You are now in the course and able to access all of the content.
6. You will also receive a message from Dalhousie University Brightspace confirming your enrolment. On subsequent logins, this course will appear in your list when you click on the 9 square icon (waffle) across the top menu.
This course is open to Tutors at all DaMed sites.
Learn to provide student support
Medical students need more than just the basics to fully understand the material that they’re learning. Tutor training sessions provide faculty with the skills they need to facilitate case based learning tutorials in Med 1, Med 2 and Clerkship (PIERS). Physician Assistant faculty may find the session helpful, too.*

* Foundations of Case-Based Tutoring in Medical Education has been created based on the formal curriculum of the undergraduate medical education program (UGME). Not all course references will be transferrable to the MPAS program. Practical and theorhetical guidelines about tutoring, including learner engagement, offering feedback, and supporting learners in distress, will be relevant for all tutors in MPAS and across DalMed.
