Moncton Hospital
The Moncton metropolitan area of Horizon Health Network provides services to the tri-communities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview, as well as southeastern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and northern Nova Scotia. The area includes one tertiary care regional hospital, one community hospital, and five health centres.
- Originally opened in 1953 with a 381-bed capacity
- Services cover a catchment population of 192,000 people
- Administers other fully accredited teaching programs, such as:
- The Dietetic Internship Program
- The School of Radiologic Technology and Research
- The Pharmacy Residency Program.
- Houses the Provincial Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit
- Opened a newly expanded Emergency Department and the Irving Ambulatory Care Centre in 2010. This $47 million, 240,000 square foot extension features modern equipment and provides an efficient space for health professionals to work
What is the learning experience like?
A friendly, small learning environment with typically one clerk per department per session. The clerkship director holds weekly meetings with clerks to see how their experience is going.
The Moncton clinical site typically only has Dalhousie students who are participating in the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Dalhousie (LICD) program. This provides you with an intimate learning environment that is focused on continuity in all areas – the learner, learning environment, the preceptors and the curriculum.
You'll receive a combination of video-conferenced lectures with clinical experience and the opportunity to work with residents. You will also receive a manual about your clerkship at the hospital prior to your arrival. Additionally, you will receive manuals for the hospital itself and your core rotations.

Moncton is at the geographic centre of the Maritimes. As the natural hub of road, rail, and air services for Atlantic Canada, there is an abundance of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities including easy access to the warm-water beaches of the Northumberland Strait and the scenic Bay of Fundy. Moncton became the first officially bilingual city in the country in 2002 and about 40% of its metropolitan population is able to speak both official languages.

The DMNB medical education unit is located in the Northumberland Centre for Medical Education and Research on the main floor.
